Google explains to Delhi court why it blocked Dhruv Rathee's controversial video

In a hearing before the Delhi high court, Google disclosed that it had blocked a YouTube video uploaded by influencer Dhruv Rathee after receiving a directive from the Centre's Grievance Appellate Committee. The platform characterized the clip as defamatory and alleged that it insulted the religious figures Bhagwan Shri Ram, Bhagwan Shri Krishna and Sita Devi, thereby hurting religious sentiments. Acting on the committee's order, Google removed the video from access throughout India.

Petitioners are now asking the court to impose a nationwide prohibition on the content. The proceedings underscore the growing scrutiny of digital content by Indian regulatory bodies and the challenges platforms face in balancing free expression with local laws.
