Google Home adds Model Context Protocol to let third-party AI agents control smart devices
Google Home now supports the Model Context Protocol, enabling external AI agents such as Claude and Open Claw to access and manage connected devices and home data.
Google announced that its smart-home platform will support the Model Context Protocol, allowing third-party AI agents to read device states, analyze historical events, and issue commands across the Google Home ecosystem. Supported agents include Claude, Open Claw, Antigravity, Hermes and others that meet MCP standards. Early access is limited to US users of Google Home Premium Advanced, priced at $20 per month or $200 per year, and requires configuring a Google Cloud project.
While the integration adds capabilities such as cross-camera queries, usage analytics, and voice notifications, Google emphasizes built-in rate limits and prohibitions on actions like unlocking doors. The move is positioned as a step toward a more open smart-home infrastructure, giving developers a platform to build custom AI services on top of Google’s hardware and data layer.
