Google Home devices reportedly downloading massive amounts of data
Owners of certain Google Home speakers have observed their units pulling hundreds of gigabytes of data daily, likely due to a faulty firmware update.
Several users have reported that their Google Home speakers are silently downloading enormous volumes of data, with one case exceeding 200 GB in a single day. The issue seems tied to unsuccessful attempts to apply a firmware update, leading the devices to repeatedly fetch data. Google acknowledged the defect and announced that a fix is currently rolling out to affected units.
Most complaints involve the latest speaker model, though the exact number of impacted devices has not been disclosed. In contrast, other owners have seen normal usage, such as a 2 GB download over a month. The bug poses a risk for customers on limited internet plans, who may unknowingly exhaust their data allowances.
