Google Maps satellite updates expose extensive destruction across Gaza

New high-resolution satellite images on Google Maps and Google Earth show large parts of Gaza reduced to rubble and makeshift shelters.

Google Maps and Google Earth have released updated satellite imagery that lays bare the scale of physical devastation in the Gaza Strip, showing entire neighborhoods turned into debris fields and temporary shelters. The images cover densely populated districts in Gaza City, Khan Younis and Rafah, where former residential blocks are now largely absent. Analysts on social media noted the clarity of the new visuals, describing them as a stark representation of the situation on the ground.

UNOSAT estimates that about 82 % of all buildings in Gaza were damaged by mid-2026, encompassing destroyed, severely, moderately and possibly damaged structures, amounting to roughly 328,627 housing units. The ongoing ceasefire has not eliminated safety risks, as weakened buildings continue to collapse and shelter shortages persist amid restrictions on bringing temporary housing into the enclave.

How the sides frame it

Both camps report Google satellite images that reveal extensive destruction in Gaza, but left-leaning coverage emphasizes the Israeli military’s role and frames the war as genocidal, while centrist coverage presents the images more neutrally and highlights the Hamas attacks that sparked the conflict.

LEFT

Left-leaning coverage frames the satellite images as stark proof of Israel’s large-scale, genocidal devastation of Gaza.

CENTER

Centrist coverage frames the images as a visual record of destruction following the Hamas attacks, presented in a neutral tone.

The left emphasises

  • Israeli military’s destructive campaign, described as genocidal
