Google partners with Voltus to launch a 1-GW virtual power plant for data centers
Google has signed a new agreement with Voltus to create a 1-gigawatt virtual power plant that pays consumers to reduce electricity use during peak periods.
The agreement expands Google’s existing flexible-capacity arrangement with Voltus for the PJM Interconnection grid. By incentivising households to cut back power at critical times, the program aims to free up enough electricity to match the growing demand from AI-driven data centers. The virtual plant will add roughly one gigawatt of capacity, helping to ease strain on the regional transmission network.
Why it matters
It shows how tech giants can use demand-response programs to ease grid pressure from AI-driven data center growth.
