Google pilots direct Flipkart purchases via Gemini AI mode in India

Google has begun a limited trial that integrates a “Buy” button into Gemini and AI Mode for certain Flipkart product listings in India, allowing users to jump straight to a Flipkart checkout flow without exiting the AI environment. The experiment currently covers a handful of items, including smartphones, electronics and mobile accessories, and is available to a subset of users. Google intends to expand the feature later in October, targeting the country’s major festive shopping period.

Competitors such as Amazon are shown in the same AI results but do not offer the direct-purchase button. The move follows Google’s broader push to embed commerce in its AI services, building on its Universal Commerce Protocol and a 2024 $350 million investment in Flipkart. The test’s underlying technology differs from earlier Google-hosted checkout experiences, and details remain undisclosed.
