Google rolls out AI-powered Universal Cart for holiday shoppers in the US

Google has launched its Universal Cart, an AI-driven tool that lets users collect items from multiple retailers in a single digital basket across Search and the Gemini app.

Google introduced its Universal Cart, an AI-enhanced shopping assistant now available in the United States through Google Search and the Gemini app. The service consolidates items from various online stores into a single cart, sending notifications about price drops, inventory updates and relevant discount codes. Shoppers may complete purchases using Google Wallet or transfer items to the merchant’s own checkout flow, with the system also recommending the optimal credit-card perk for each purchase.

While integration with Gmail and YouTube is promised, Google has not disclosed a rollout schedule for those platforms. The launch comes amid growing competition from AI shopping agents launched by OpenAI, Meta and Shopify, which are all betting on automated online purchasing as the next evolution of e-commerce.

Why it matters

It centralizes online shopping, potentially reshaping how consumers compare prices and complete purchases during the holiday season.
