Google's AI Business Summaries Spark Reputation Risks for Small Firms

Small companies such as The Plastics Shed report that Google's AI-generated overviews are mistakenly labeling them with negative feedback, harming their reputation and sales.

When Damian Mansell searched for reviews of his 2025-started online plastics supplier, The Plastics Shed, Google's AI overview incorrectly painted the company as suffering from delayed deliveries, dishonest staff and damaged products, even though those comments were about competitors. Mansell, who pays roughly £700 a month for Google ads, found the false summary deterred potential customers and struggled to obtain a refund.

Similar problems have been voiced by other small-business owners, such as Idaho-based Betty Whitney, whose property-management firm was merged with a defunct business in AI results, and Northern Virginia realtor Philippa Main, whose profile still lists service in Tampa Bay despite her relocation. Experts like Chirag Shah and Lily Ray note that the shift from multiple search results to a single AI-generated answer removes the natural checks that previously balanced misinformation.

While Google claims its overviews draw from a wide range of sources and are generally accurate, the technology can hallucinate or pull from outdated forums, leaving businesses to constantly monitor and tweak their online presence. Legal actions in Canada and Germany illustrate growing scrutiny over the liability of such AI-driven content.

Why it matters

Inaccurate AI summaries can damage small businesses' reputations and revenue, with limited recourse for correction.
