Google's AI tool aims to cut climate impact of aircraft contrails

Google unveiled an AI-based application that identifies atmospheric "sweet spots" where aircraft contrails are likely to persist and contribute to warming. By integrating predictive models, satellite pictures and meteorological information, the tool proposes altitude changes for pilots to bypass these zones, much like standard turbulence avoidance. In a test with Cathay Pacific, the program led to a noticeable reduction in contrail-related warming.

The software is offered to airlines and aviation authorities at no cost. Researchers note that while the approach is inexpensive, airlines may need incentives to adopt it, as slight altitude changes could increase fuel use.
