Google's data centre plans face regulatory pushback in Finland and abroad

Finland's regulator ordered Google to halt construction of data centres in Muhos and Kajaani over incomplete environmental assessments, while similar opposition is occurring worldwide.

Finland's LVV has demanded that Google suspend the preparation of data centres in Muhos and Kajaani because the company proceeded before completing the required environmental impact assessments. The decision targets a sizable investment effort by Google in the country. Similar challenges have arisen in other regions: a Chilean court partially revoked a permit for a Google data centre near Santiago over water-availability worries, and the company is considering alternative cooling methods.

In India, a proposed centre in Andhra Pradesh has sparked protests over water use and proximity to a protected area, leading to multiple demonstrations and legal actions. Activist groups in the United States have also intensified opposition to data centre projects, resulting in numerous delays and cancellations nationwide.

Why it matters

Data centre projects affect local environments, water resources and energy use, influencing community welfare and climate impact.
