Google signs power purchase for 396 MW of geothermal from Fervo's Utah plant

Google has entered a power purchase agreement to obtain 396 megawatts of electricity from Fervo’s Cape Station geothermal plant in Utah, with the facility expected to be operational by 2028. The contract includes an option for Google to purchase an extra 600 megawatts through June 2030, reinforcing its search for low-carbon power for a new data center. This move follows a controversial 933-megawatt natural-gas deal in Texas that complicated Google’s net-zero by 2030 target.
Fervo is licensed for up to 2 gigawatts at the site, and senior vice president of strategy Sarah Jewett noted that a third-party engineer believes the geothermal resource could generate twice that amount. If fully realized, the project would roughly double U.S. geothermal capacity, and the partnership builds on a five-year relationship that included earlier electricity sales and a recent equity investment by Google. The news lifted Fervo’s stock about 30% before a modest pullback.
