Democratic incumbent Roy Cooper, who secured a decisive victory in the 2024 governor's race, is viewed as the clear frontrunner for the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Republican Thom Tillis.

Pollster Sarah Longwell explained that the state’s history as a purple battleground makes such confusion notable, as it regularly supports GOP presidential nominees while electing Democrats locally. Whatley’s low name recognition and the lack of a campaign footprint have created an uphill battle against Cooper’s popularity and clean record. Voters expressed frustration, with some undecided voters indicating they know little about Whatley beyond his alignment with President Donald Trump. The situation underscores the challenges faced by the GOP in a state that has not voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since 2008.
