On August 6, Senators Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, Josh Hawley of Missouri and Jim Banks of Indiana submitted an amendment designed to safeguard state statutes that prevent biological men from participating in women’s sports, with Hawley asserting the need to protect women’s locker rooms. Conservative pollster Sarah Longwell interpreted the flurry of anti-trans sports legislation as a sign that the MAGA wing of the party feels vulnerable as the 2026 midterms approach.
