Government and PTI opposition pause talks as Oct 4 march looms over Islamabad

The first round of negotiations between the PTI-led opposition and the ruling coalition ended, with both sides set to reconvene tomorrow amid growing tension over the planned Oct 4 protest in the federal capital.

The initial round of talks between representatives of the PTI-led opposition and the ruling coalition wrapped up on Friday, with a commitment to continue dialogue on Saturday. The discussions focused on defusing a mounting political crisis, centered on PTI’s planned Oct 4 long march in Islamabad demanding the release of its founder. Federal ministers have cautioned that, if the march proceeds, the government may be forced to impose governor’s rule or an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to security concerns.

In response, PTI warned of dire repercussions should such measures be taken. A joint delegation of PPP and government officials met the previous day to review the “current political situation,” after a high-level meeting that included the president, prime minister, and interior minister. Off-the-record consultations continue, with senior PTI leaders retaining final say over the protest’s timing.

Why it matters

The talks determine whether Pakistan will face a large-scale protest or a possible emergency rule, affecting national stability.
