Government awards rescue workers and proposes new wealth and exit taxes

The cabinet approved a one-month salary bonus for about 1,100 participants in the Paksi nuclear plant rescue, and announced plans for a wealth tax and an exit tax on large overseas assets.

During a press conference, Prime Minister Magyar Péter announced that participants in the Paksi nuclear plant rescue operation—spanning law enforcement, fire brigades, technical university personnel and plant staff—will be granted a bonus equal to one month’s salary, affecting around 1,100 people. He also introduced a new wealth tax, arguing that recent tax policy has favored labor income over capital gains, leading to wealth concentration among a narrow segment of society.

To complement this, the government will implement an exit tax on assets over one billion that are transferred abroad. Both tax proposals are intended to generate additional revenue and promote a fairer distribution of wealth across the population. The bonus program is expected to cost the state budget, though the exact amount was not disclosed.

Why it matters
