Government backs floating offshore wind project despite calls for review
Energy Minister Terje Aasland reaffirmed support for the Utsira Nord floating wind scheme, citing renewable benefits and economic impact, after a parliamentary majority demanded a review.
Following a summer parliamentary vote by several parties to reassess state funding for floating offshore wind, the government obtained one outlet's reports from Enova, Oslo Economics and the law firm Wiersholm for inclusion in the 2027 budget. Energy Minister Terje Aasland reiterated that the Utsira Nord project is essential for expanding renewable power and advancing technology, noting its contribution to the national power balance.
Wiersholm warned that while the state's financial commitment is capped, it could face compensation claims if it cancels the support competition. Oslo Economics projected substantial employment and value creation during construction and operation, especially in Rogaland, Vestland and Trøndelag. Enova highlighted the project's potential to lower future electricity prices and drive cost reductions in the sector. The ministry also announced adjustments to the support agreement, including penalties for project termination and staged disbursements of state aid.
