Government cashes $627 million from sale of seized Anthropic shares

The U.S. government sold Anthropic Series B shares seized from former FTX executives for $627 million, a fraction of their current value.

The federal government disposed of 4,453,900 Anthropic Series B shares in October 2025, generating $627 million from the transaction. These shares were originally acquired by former FTX executives Caroline Ellison and Nishad Singh during Anthropic’s 2022 fundraising round and were later forfeited following their guilty pleas. The U.S. Marshals Service’s Complex Assets Unit handled the sale, after which Anthropic bought back the shares at the same $627 million price and allocated them to nine undisclosed investors.

The government has not moved the proceeds to the FTX bankruptcy estate, where they could be used to compensate victims. The case highlights how assets linked to the Sam Bankman-Fried fraud are being liquidated through criminal forfeiture processes.
