Government chief seeks to convert former PUSL headquarters into Romani museum

Government Secretary General Dan Reșitnec asked RA-APPS to begin transferring the former PUSL office near the Arcul de Triumf to the National Agency for Romani Affairs for use as a Romani history museum.

In a Facebook post, Dan Reșitnec, the Secretary General of the Romanian Government, urged the State Asset Recovery Agency (RA-APPS) to start internal procedures to hand over the building occupied by the People's Movement Party (PUSL) at the roundabout near the Arcul de Triumf. The property would be placed under the National Agency for Romani Affairs to serve as the headquarters of the National Museum of History and Culture of the Romani in Romania, a museum created by Law no. 238/2023 that has struggled to find a venue for three years.

Reșitnec noted that the court this week dismissed PUSL’s request to suspend the transfer. He argued that state-owned buildings have often been allocated to well-connected parties and that converting this former party office into a museum would make the space accessible to all citizens. The move is presented as a step toward honoring Romani heritage and correcting past allocation practices.

Why it matters

It shows how the government plans to repurpose a politically linked property for cultural inclusion of the Romani community.
