Government commissions technical study to boost South-bank water supply via Castelo de Bode
Portugal’s government has ordered a 120-day study to find a technical solution for water provision to the south side of the Tagus, including possible use of the Castelo de Bode reservoir.
In a decree published on Wednesday, the Portuguese government instructed the Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente and Águas de Portugal to develop a technical solution for water supply to the Tagus’ south bank within 120 days. Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho highlighted the need to tap additional surface-water sources, specifically the Tagus River and the Castelo de Bode reservoir on the north bank, which may require crossing the river via existing bridges or a planned third crossing.
This initiative seeks to reduce pressure on the Tejo-Sado aquifer, the sole source for the southern municipalities, after a summer water crisis forced rationing in Almada. The study will also integrate alternative non-potable water uses and incorporate digital monitoring to improve efficiency. It is intended to meet future demand driven by population growth, economic expansion, the new Lisbon Airport, and related urban and logistical developments.
