Government contractor arrested for passing top-secret defense data to partner who posted it online

The FBI arrested a Washington, D.C. contractor accused of giving classified national-defense information to his romantic partner, who later published it on a Substack site.

Federal agents detained Ian A. Brinksman, a 42-year-old contractor based in Washington, D.C., on charges of unlawfully transmitting classified national-defense information. Brinksman had been employed by a federal agency in the Eastern District of Virginia since 2020 and, from 2022, worked as a systems integration developer for a contractor serving that agency, with a top-secret security clearance. Investigators say he accessed sensitive compartmented information beyond his job responsibilities and passed it to his romantic partner, who operated a Substack publication.

That partner posted the material online in a September fundraising article that claimed to reveal classified assessments. Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Eisenberg described the conduct as a breach of some of the nation’s most closely held secrets. The FBI carried out a search of Brinksman's residence before making the arrest.
