Government debates permanent funding for classroom assistants amid coalition disputes

The cabinet is reviewing a proposal to make teaching assistants a stable part of schools, while coalition partners voice concerns over the scale and cost of inclusion.

The Ministry of Education presented a draft to secure stable financing for classroom assistants, seeking to shift them from a temporary aid based on assessments to a permanent school position. Coalition partners from smaller parties have raised objections, saying the proposed expansion is impractical and would strain the budget. SPD head Tomio Okamura urged a cap on inclusion measures, while ANO chief Andrej Babiš affirmed that education will remain a key focus despite criticism from the Motoristé faction.

Minister Plaga rejected suggestions to dismantle inclusion, noting that special schools cost three times more per pupil and that most children needing assistance are capable of mainstream education with support. The government also plans to revisit a cultural policy proposal and consider visa extensions for Belarusian relatives residing in the Czech Republic.

Why it matters

The decision will shape how Czech schools support students with special needs and affect coalition stability.
