Government extends deadline for firms to update CAEN activity codes by six months

The interim Economy Minister announced a six-month extension for companies and professionals to revise their CAEN Rev. 3 activity codes.

Romania's interim Minister of Economy, Irineu Darău, confirmed that the government has amended the decree governing the shift to CAEN Rev. 3, adding six months to the transition window. This move responds to the fact that a minority of firms and professionals have completed the required updates, with some sectors such as trade, construction, transport and IT encountering particularly intricate changes. The amendment allows both the old and new CAEN codes to be used concurrently during the extended period.

Darău emphasized that the longer timeline will help avoid administrative disruptions, ease pressure on entrepreneurs, and ensure more accurate economic statistics for Eurostat. The National Trade Register Office provides the data on compliance rates.

Why it matters

The extension helps businesses avoid penalties and improves the reliability of national economic statistics.
