Government Moves to Bring East Midlands Railway into Public Ownership by 2027

The Department for Transport has ordered East Midlands Railway to act immediately on its underperforming intercity services, while the government plans to nationalise the operator by the end of 2027.

The Department for Transport issued an order this month requiring East Midlands Railway to take immediate steps to address shortcomings on its intercity services. Simultaneously, the government is preparing to place the entire franchise under public ownership by the close of 2027, with the earliest contractual exit point set for 18 October. East Midlands Railway maintains it has not yet been told when the transition will occur.

Labour MP Neil O’Brien criticised the plan as a political photo-op, suggesting the trains will simply be repainted and service may not improve. The move follows a broader strategy to shift rail services from private operators to state control, prompting debate over effectiveness and cost. Robert Jenrick raised unrelated concerns on a radio programme, illustrating the political turbulence surrounding transport policy.

Why it matters

The shift could reshape UK rail services, affecting passengers, taxpayers and future transport policy.
