Government moves to impose compulsory wage arbitration as private care strike wanes

Over 120 workers in private care services have been striking, and the government announced a forced wage arbitration to end the dispute.

A labour dispute affecting over 120 staff in privately run care services has persisted, prompting the government to act. Minister Kjersti Stenseng announced plans to table a legislative proposal that would enable a compulsory wage arbitration board to settle the conflict. The strike, driven by a clash between the union Fagforbundet and the employer association NHO Geneo, has been extended several times, raising concerns from the Directorate of Immigration and the Ministry of Justice and Public Security about potential risks to life and health.

Parties met on Friday afternoon but reported no breakthrough. By intervening, the government seeks to prevent further escalation as the industrial action draws to a close.

Why it matters

The forced arbitration could set a precedent for handling future labour disputes in essential services.
