Government Mulls Special Parliament Session Next Month to Pass Delimitation and Women’s Quota Bills

The Union government has indicated interest in convening a special session of Parliament next month to move forward with bills on constituency delimitation and women’s reservation, issues emphasized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Senior NDA sources report that the government is contacting alliance members, including the BJP, TDP, JDU and Shiv Sena, but no official dates have been set and the monsoon session remains unprorogued.

Opposition leaders, such as Congress chief whip Jairam Ramesh, claim they were not approached and dismiss the speculation. A previous attempt to amend the constitution to increase Lok Sabha seats and link the women’s quota to the census fell short of the two-thirds threshold. The government is also courting regional parties like the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and NCP (SP) leader Sharad Pawar to gather sufficient support.
