Government orders crackdown on LPG hoarding to stabilize supplies and prices
Federal authorities have instructed agencies to stop alleged LPG hoarding and ensure regular deliveries at regulated rates, especially in remote regions.
A letter from the Petroleum Division highlighted irregular lifting of imported LPG, raising concerns of artificial shortages and price spikes. In response, the government ordered the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) to work with provincial governments and port agencies to take swift corrective action. Authorities are to enforce the availability of LPG at notified prices, with particular focus on remote and mountainous communities that rely heavily on the fuel.
The division also reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent, competitive process for allocating locally produced LPG, seeking to broaden market participation and reduce concentration among a few players. Ongoing litigation over the allocation mechanism was noted, and the government reserved the right to pursue all legal options to ensure market efficiency and consumer protection.
Why it matters
Ensuring LPG availability at fair prices prevents energy shortages for vulnerable households in remote areas.
