Government pledges budget measures to ease price pressures on Malaysians

The budget will prioritize shielding citizens from rising costs of goods and services, with savings redirected to targeted assistance.

During a special budget broadcast, the head of government outlined a strategy to cushion Malaysians from escalating commodity and logistics costs, citing the surge in imported phosphate fertilizer after the Hormuz Strait shutdown. While external factors like global supply chain disruptions remain beyond control, the administration aims to redirect savings from curbing leakages and improving fiscal discipline toward direct aid, including footwear for schoolchildren and income support for rubber and paddy producers.

Measures to streamline supply chains, broaden farmers’ market networks, and increase sales via the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority were also highlighted. The 2027 budget, totaling RM460 billion—RM40 billion more than the 2026 estimate—covers growth initiatives and welfare provisions for gig workers, pet owners, and minimum-wage earners. Officials emphasized that a robust fiscal position will ensure assistance reaches intended beneficiaries.
