Government proposes tighter teacher training standards focusing on core subjects

The government is set to unveil a revised education plan that restructures teacher training to address recent declines in student achievement. Ministers Eileen Fugelsnes and Kari Nessa Nordtun explained that the overhaul will standardise teacher qualifications, guaranteeing the same level of expertise regardless of where teachers are trained. New curricula will give greater weight to classroom management, reading, writing, arithmetic and recreational learning.

The proposal also calls for removing more than a hundred specific learning-outcome descriptions, consolidating them into a limited set of core competencies. Officials argue that better-prepared teachers will create environments conducive to concentration and learning. The initiative comes after the most recent PISA survey highlighted a steady drop in Norwegian pupils' reading and math scores. The reform will be released for public consultation on Monday.
