Government proposes unlimited building heights to boost Auckland city centre growth
The government has released a proposal to remove height and density limits in Auckland’s central business district, aiming to increase housing, jobs and economic activity.
The government unveiled a sweeping plan to eliminate height, tower dimension, setback and floor-area ratio limits in Auckland’s city centre, following an investigation that found existing rules may be restricting growth. Ministers Chris Bishop and Christopher Luxon will elaborate on the proposal at a Committee for Auckland gathering. Modelling indicates the reforms could support roughly 17,000 extra dwellings, accommodate about 31,600 more residents and create around 37,200 additional jobs in the central area, potentially boosting annual national GDP by close to $2 billion at full uptake.
Auckland Minister Simon Watts also recommended removing non-contributing sites from the Karangahape Rd Historic Heritage Area to enable redevelopment while preserving key heritage assets.
