Government refuses to withdraw housing decrees despite opposition from PP, Vox and Junts

Spain's coalition government will keep two housing decrees in force, rejecting Junts' late-night request to repeal them, and urged opposition parties to choose between citizens and speculators.

Spain's coalition government confirmed it will maintain both housing decrees despite Junts' last-minute attempt to rescind them on Thursday night. Officials explained that the decrees were the result of months of negotiation to address housing speculation, curb vulture-fund activity, facilitate first-home purchases, promote affordable rentals and prevent evictions without harming small owners. The government highlighted the recent suspension of an eviction of a Barcelona resident named Macarena as evidence of the decrees' impact.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez posted on X that the opposition's vote will reveal whether they stand with citizens or speculators, affecting future generations. Ministers from the Sumar platform, including Yolanda Díaz, Ernest Urtasun, Mónica García, Pablo Bustinduy and Verónica Barbero, echoed the call for the opposition to side with the public, stressing that the government will not retract the measures.

Why it matters

The decision shapes Spain's housing policy and signals how the ruling coalition will confront real-estate speculation.
