Government says airfare pricing rules will be released within two weeks

The Centre informed the Supreme Court that draft rules on airline ticket pricing have been finalized and will be published in the next fortnight.

In a recent Supreme Court hearing, the Centre announced that the draft regulations on airline fare pricing have been finalized and cleared for administrative approval. The government pledged to make the rules public within the next two weeks, complying with a prior three-week deadline set by the court. The matter was postponed to November 16 for further consideration.

The petition driving the case calls for stronger consumer protections against abrupt fare hikes and urges the establishment of an independent aviation regulator with enforcement powers. The bench noted its own concern over rising ticket prices, describing the public as “victims of the surge in airfares.” The upcoming publication aims to address these consumer-focused demands.

Why it matters

Published fare rules could curb unpredictable ticket price hikes and strengthen consumer protection in air travel.
