Government to Deploy 2,000 Fraud Specialists to Jobcentres to Reclaim £1.4bn

John Healey plans to station 2,000 anti-fraud officers in Jobcentres to target benefit fraud and recover about £1.4 billion for taxpayers.

John Healey announced a plan to embed 2,000 anti-fraud specialists within Jobcentres, pairing them with Work Coaches to identify suspicious Universal Credit applications at an early stage. The initiative will tighten scrutiny of claims made from abroad, targeting individuals who do not disclose their departure from the country. Recent cases highlighted include a fraudster who siphoned almost £39,000 while living in Zimbabwe and a Midlands applicant who used a vacant building as a false address for childcare costs.

Treasury officials say the effort aims to save £1.4 billion and protect the welfare system’s integrity. Meanwhile, the overall benefits budget is expected to climb by £5.5 billion next year, outpacing Treasury forecasts. Ministers warn that rising inflation and CPI-linked increases will keep pressure on public finances.
