Government to Re-test Barium-Based Green Firecrackers After Agency Dispute
The Union government told the Supreme Court it will commission new studies on the environmental impact of barium-containing green firecrackers, following opposite views from CSIR-NEERI and the Central Pollution Control Board.
During a Supreme Court hearing, the centre announced fresh testing to evaluate the harm caused by green firecrackers that use barium. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-NEERI has approved the newer formulations, whereas the Central Pollution Control Board has raised objections. Earlier findings suggested about a 30% reduction in particulate emissions and up to a 32% cut in solid waste for combined crackers.

The outcome will determine whether greener fireworks can be sold without harming air quality or waste levels.
