Government, unions and employers agree on higher public sector salaries starting next year
The state, trade unions and employer groups have reached a deal to raise basic pay for public sector staff from January, with no cuts to anyone's earnings.
A tripartite agreement was signed by the government, trade unions and employers to adjust public sector pay scales beginning next January. Under the new system most workers will see an increase in their basic salary, and no employee will experience a reduction. The Labour Ministry estimates the public sector employs roughly 585,000 people. Officials said the revised structure will be simpler and more predictable.
Why it matters
It secures higher wages for hundreds of thousands of public workers and prevents pay from dropping below the minimum wage.
