Government unveils zero-interest loans and support fund for shops hit by recent riots

After an emergency meeting with business leaders, ministers announced zero-interest loans and a new aid fund to help retailers damaged in the October 17-18 attacks.

In a rapid response to the widespread looting on October 17 and 18, French ministers convened an extraordinary business council and revealed a package of measures for harmed retailers. The plan includes interest-free loans, to be administered by Bpifrance, that merchants can obtain by submitting an insurance loss statement. A dedicated fund will be created for companies with under 50 staff, with eligibility criteria to be discussed later and compensation based on revenue losses since the attacks.

Local governments, including the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, have announced complementary aid packages for each affected store. Additional steps involve easing tax payment schedules and encouraging courts to adopt a more flexible stance toward distressed businesses. The government also signaled a tougher legal approach toward the perpetrators, referencing upcoming legislation aimed at holding them financially accountable.
