Government urged to fast-track jobs and infrastructure for flood-hit Nepal communities

A recent ILO assessment says over 21,400 people near the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli corridor face disrupted livelihoods after flash floods, prompting calls for swift job-creation and reconstruction measures.

Flash floods along the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli corridor have caused extensive loss of life, property and infrastructure, and an International Labour Organisation rapid assessment indicates that more than 21,400 people living within four kilometres of the affected area are experiencing severe livelihood disruptions. The destruction of homes, workplaces, transport links and energy facilities has blocked access to jobs, markets and essential services, affecting daily-wage laborers, informal and own-account workers, micro-entrepreneurs, tourism staff and women business owners.

The government has pledged tax and customs concessions, loan restructuring and cheaper credit for flood-hit businesses, but critics warn that these measures must reach informal and small-scale operators to be effective. Immediate reconstruction of roads, bridges and key tourist destinations such as Langtang, Gosaikunda and Kailash Mansarovar is deemed crucial for reconnecting workers to employment opportunities. The ILO recommends targeted investment in decent work, job-matching, safety, social protection and skills development, especially for women entrepreneurs willing to rebuild. Swift, focused action is presented as non-negotiable for those dependent on cross-border trade, transport, hydropower and tourism to avoid prolonged economic limbo.

Why it matters

Restoring jobs and infrastructure is vital for flood survivors to regain income and prevent long-term poverty in Nepal.
