Government warns PP and Vox threaten democracy by urging mass voter disenfranchisement

The government says the PP and Vox are endangering Spain's democratic system by pushing for a large-scale suspension of voting rights.

As the deadline to finalize the voter register approaches, the government acknowledges its limited options following a Supreme Court order that temporarily suspends voting rights for a substantial group of naturalised citizens, with no timely recourse to the Constitutional Court. Justice Minister Félix Bolaños told La Sexta that the State's legal team exhausted all possible actions during the Supreme Court phase and that affected individuals must now pursue their own legal remedies.

He described the court's decision as a serious violation of fundamental rights, especially the sacred right to vote. Bolaños also condemned statements by Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who warned that democracy cannot be clean without a clean census, labeling them as undermining Spain's exemplary democratic and electoral system. He further accused the PP and Vox of promoting ultra-right policies that jeopardise democratic institutions and result in massive rights reductions.

Why it matters

The dispute raises concerns about voter rights and the stability of Spain's democratic processes.
