The Labor Day rally in Ellsworth, Maine, organized by Hancock County Activists and Acadia Action Peacemakers, removed former Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner from its speaker roster. The change came after Jenny Racicot and Lyndsey Fifield, both former partners of Platner, urged the group to drop him, citing accusations of rape, sexual abuse, and emotional mistreatment. Carol Leonard of the activists said the media frenzy and safety concerns prompted the move, and Platner will now head a veterans’ march rather than speak.
Platner maintains his innocence regarding the claims that forced him to suspend his congressional campaign. The pressure campaign continued after he withdrew from the Senate race against Sen. Susan Collins, with critics like Cheyenne Hunt of Reckoning Action calling the invitation reckless. Troy Jackson has been named as Platner’s replacement on the Democratic ticket for the upcoming Senate contest.
