Grand Canyon water system to be back online within weeks after flash flood
National Park Service officials say the Transcanyon Waterline will be restored in weeks, not months, after the recent flash flood.
Following the deadly flash flood on Aug. 29, the National Park Service expects to complete the upgrade of the 12.5-mile Transcanyon Waterline in just over a month, bringing water service back to the South Rim and roughly 1,600 Grand Canyon Village residents. Construction of a temporary intake that replicates the park’s original pumping capacity will begin this week, supporting the ongoing $200 million repair and upgrade effort.
The project, originally intended to secure water supplies for the next 50 years, was not severely damaged by the flood, allowing a faster timeline. Park officials continue to ask both residents and tourists to conserve water during the work. The flood caused two deaths, one missing person, and about 80 rescues, with search operations still underway.
