Grand Slam tournaments launch player council to boost athlete influence

The four major tennis championships have announced a new player advisory council that will give competitors a stronger voice on tournament matters.

The four Grand Slam events - the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open - introduced a Grand Slam Player Advisory Council, slated to begin after the final major of the year in New York. The move responds to player demands for a bigger slice of tournament revenues, enhanced health options and pension provisions. Some competitors, including Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff, reduced their media presence at the French Open and Wimbledon as a form of protest, even hinting at possible boycotts.

Jessica Pegula emphasized the importance of player input given the tournaments' impact on careers. The council will be composed of players who apply for positions and will serve as a forum to discuss prize money, welfare and other concerns with each event individually. Deborah Jevans, chair of the All England Club, said the council aims to strengthen the partnership between the tournaments and the athletes.

Why it matters

It gives tennis players a formal channel to influence the sport's biggest events and revenue distribution.
