Grass fire engulfs CFB Wainwright training area, killing four soldiers and injuring dozens
A grass fire swept through CFB Wainwright’s training grounds Saturday, killing four soldiers and wounding 39, including 19 critically.
A rapidly spreading grass fire struck the CFB Wainwright training complex in Alberta on Saturday, resulting in four soldiers dead and 39 injured, with 19 in critical condition. Retired Major-General David Fraser, who spent three decades training at the base, described the exercises as large-scale, progressive operations that can involve up to 6,000 participants and both unloaded and live weapons. Maj-Gen Wade Rutland later clarified that a grass fire a kilometre away was deemed under control before a sudden violent windstorm pushed flames onto the soldiers.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that families of the deceased have been notified and that the victims came from bases across Canada. The base, located about 200 km southeast of Edmonton and adjacent to the town of Wainwright, is a premier Canadian military training site used for Afghanistan deployments. Authorities from the Canadian Armed Forces and the RCMP will investigate the cause of the fire and assess any further damage.
