Great white shark kills swimmer, prompting closure of Joondalup beaches

A fatal great white shark attack occurred at Sorrento Beach when a man in his 60s was bitten while swimming with a companion about 15 m offshore at approximately 10.15 am on Friday. Witnesses reported a large, possibly five-metre-long shark, and the victim died, though recovery of his remains was still unclear the following morning. Fisheries Minister Jackie Jarvis has directed that the animal be destroyed, and the City of Joondalup has kept all northern beaches—from Marmion to Iluka—closed until at least midday.

Patrols are expected to restart later if weather permits, while local residents described the scene of blood spreading through the water. The incident revives concerns about shark safety, recalling a previous great-white encounter at the same spot a year earlier and the removal of a shark enclosure in 2020.
