A new study verifies that the New York Bight, particularly the Hamptons area, functions as a seasonal nursery for juvenile great white sharks, which return each summer to feed on local fish stocks. Tagging programs conducted by the South Fork Natural History Museum and Nature Center have tracked sharks on long migrations reaching the Gulf of Mexico, yet many return to Long Island the following year. Scientists note that the shallow coastal waters provide both food and relative safety for the newborns, which can be up to four feet long and weigh 80 pounds.
The area is also seeing more warm-water species such as spinner, blacktip and bull sharks, a trend attributed to warming coastal waters. Improved detection tools like drones and acoustic receivers have made shark sightings more common than in past decades. Conservationists stress that understanding these patterns can help shift public perception from fear to appreciation of sharks’ ecological role.
