Greece and Egypt begin talks to widen 2020 maritime boundary agreement

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis spoke by phone with his Egyptian counterpart, Bantr Abnélati, to discuss expanding the scope of their 2020 EEZ pact.

During a call, the two ministers reaffirmed their opposition to the recently approved Turkish-Libyan memorandum on maritime delimitation. They emphasized adherence to international law and agreed to keep diplomatic consultations ongoing. The goal is to broaden the geographic application of the 2020 agreement that defines their exclusive economic zones.

Why it matters

The talks could reshape maritime jurisdiction and resource rights in the Eastern Mediterranean.
