Greece launches new programs to boost jobs and settlement in remote regions
Deputy Minister Thanasis Kontogeorgis outlined several initiatives aimed at creating employment and encouraging permanent residence in Greece's rural and island areas.
Thanasis Kontogeorgis presented a suite of measures designed to attract workers and settlers to Greece's less-populated regions. A Public Employment Service program will subsidise 90% of wages and contributions for remote jobs in isolated areas for one year. In Kastellorizo, authorities are negotiating a model that combines relocation benefits, housing for civil servants and remote-work options.
Thessaly's "Young Farmers' Settlement" will admit 799 new agricultural entrants. A joint venture between the Public Power Corporation and Amazon Web Services will build a 300 MW data centre in Western Macedonia, signalling a shift toward high-tech industry. Funding is also earmarked for two new National Marine Parks, with satellite offices planned on Kythera, Milos and Amorgos, linking environmental protection to local economies. Further initiatives include a Second Chance School in Drama and a sports and cultural inclusion program for seniors and people with disabilities in the Peloponnese.
