Greece moves to enforce sanctions tied to Iranian activities
The Greek finance ministry announced it is applying sanctions linked to Iran and is reviewing related legal and financial measures.
Athens confirmed that its finance ministry is implementing sanctions connected to Iran and is backing initiatives to curb money-laundering and terrorist financing. The announcement came after the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned the law firm Karnakis & Karnakis, citing its long-term legal support for Iranian shipping operations. In addition, the U.S. Financial Crimes Enforcement Network served an administrative subpoena to further investigate a Greek bank, though the bank was not identified.
The Greek ministry said it has taken note of the U.S. actions, is reviewing all available data, and will take appropriate steps within the framework of national, EU and international regulations. This response underscores Greece’s alignment with broader Western efforts to pressure Iran-linked financial networks. The ministry emphasized ongoing cooperation with international partners to ensure compliance.
