Greece Prepares to Lead UN Security Council Amid Global Crises
Greece will assume the UN Security Council presidency on October 1, focusing on maritime security, women and children protection, and major international conflicts.
Greece is set to chair the UN Security Council beginning October 1, marking its second and final month in the role during its 2025-26 non-permanent membership. Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said the Council faces a complex mix of crises and outlined key themes: maritime security and freedom of navigation, especially in the Gulf, and the protection of women and children in armed conflict. He also stressed the need for peaceful dispute resolution and greater input from countries outside the 15-member body.
The Greek agenda will confront the wars in Ukraine, tensions across the Middle East and Africa, and developments in Haiti, Western Sahara and Colombia, while also playing a part in selecting the next UN secretary-general. Greece’s broader diplomatic calendar includes a future EU Council presidency in 2027, underscoring its push for multilateralism and international law.
