Greece Receives Fifteen More Ancient Artifacts Repatriated from the United States
Fifteen Greek antiquities seized in the United States were handed over to Culture Minister Lina Mendoni in a ceremony at the Manhattan District Attorney’s office.
A special hand-over ceremony in Manhattan saw fifteen illegally exported Greek antiquities returned to the Ministry of Culture, with Minister Lina Mendoni receiving them. The items span from the Pre-historic Cycladic period to the early Roman era, including a marble Cycladic figurine, a bronze bracelet, and a gold amphora-shaped necklace. Their return follows extensive research and joint action by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Antiquities Trafficking Unit, led by Deputy Assistant District Attorney Matthew Bogdanos, and Greek cultural officials.
Since 2022, 179 artifacts have been repatriated under similar decisions, highlighting ongoing bilateral cooperation. The event was also attended by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for Cultural Affairs Catherine Dillon, Greek Consul General Ifigenia Kanara, and director Vasos Papageorgiou of the Directorate for Documentation and Protection of Cultural Assets.
