Greece signs contract to modernize driver licensing and vehicle plate systems
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport signed a contract to upgrade its digital services, targeting driver education, licensing exams and vehicle plate management.
Today the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport concluded a contract to enhance its digital platform, with financing from the Digital Governance Development Programme 2026-2030 and a planned two-year rollout. The deal focuses on three pillars: strengthening user-role management and system interoperability; deploying an integrated information system that tracks driver candidates’ theoretical and practical training in real time, supported by a mobile application offering interactive road-code tests and simulations; and establishing a comprehensive vehicle-plate management system that automates number assignment, digital inventory handling and links to vehicle registries.
Deputy Minister Giorgos Kotsiriras, General Secretary Demosthenes Anagnostopoulos and Institute of Technology and Research representative Konstantinos Stefandidis signed the contract, with ministers Dimitris Papastergiou and Stelios Sakarettios present. Officials said the reforms will cut bureaucracy, boost transparency and improve road safety through better driver education and reliable plate issuance.
Why it matters
Modernizing these services should speed up licensing, reduce paperwork and enhance road safety for Greek citizens.
