Greek Coast Guard seizes over 7.5 kg of cocaine and cannabis at Eleftherios Venizelos, arrests Swedish suspect
Greek Coast Guard and customs officers confiscated more than 7.5 kg of cocaine and cannabis at Athens' Eleftherios Venizelos Airport and detained a 32-year-old Swedish national.
Authorities from the Greek Coast Guard, the drug-crime directorate and the Eastern Attica customs office executed a coordinated raid at the Eleftherios Venizelos Airport, discovering two wooden crates hidden in a storage area. The first crate, shipped from Brazil, held four plastic packets of cocaine totaling about 2 kg, while the second, sent from the United States, contained ten airtight plastic bags of hydroponic “skunk” cannabis weighing roughly 5 kg.
Both shipments were detected with the help of the police dog “ΜΕΖΚΑΛ”. Following approval from the Athens Court of Appeals, the 32-year-old Swedish recipient was apprehended in Attica. The seizure also yielded a mobile phone, and the case is being investigated jointly with Brazilian and U.S. law-enforcement agencies. Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Βασίλης Κικίλιας praised the operation while abroad, emphasizing a zero-tolerance stance toward drugs and organized crime.
Why it matters
The bust demonstrates Greece's capability to intercept major drug shipments and disrupt trans-national trafficking networks.
